01 Aug When are lithium battery cells going to be superseded by new tech?

People often ask me if they buy an electric motorcycle today will the tech what's around the corner for battery tech, will there bike be superseded by better battery tech? My answer is no.

Well... yes and no. There are already new technologies that far outperform the  2170, 18650 and prismatic cells that dominate the electric vehicle market. However they won't be commercially viable for years to come.

There has been huge investment in giga factories in the twenty-first century. When I was invited to visit my first giga factory - in the days gone by when we were allowed to leave the country - I was thrilled.

This place had its own postcode.

There are no factory workers here. Lab engineers were peppered around the facilities.  Golf carts (electric) ferrying us between buildings on the tour.

I wasn't allowed to take photos but it was awesome to walk through the long tunnels with floor to ceiling glass looking windows. The level of robotics & automation is just incredible - coming from the handcrafting Fonz micro factory its pretty mind blowing stuff.

I'd say its going to take a few more years to amortise those GIGA-capital costs.

Meanwhile the great development in electric battery cells is their second life applications. And in 10 years the battery cells powering your electric motorcycle today could be entering their second life. Perhaps regional Queensland storing power for a solar project.

I believe in the short term there are more opportunities for advancement in the vehicles management system. We've achieved this with improvements in returning kinetic energy to the Powerpack through advancements in our regenerative braking.
